To their credit and in front of a standing room only crowd in the High School LGI Room, much of the actual business of the district got done the evening of Monday, August 10th: hiring for open positions, department head appointments, etc. But despite a public call for unity from Acting Superintendent Barry Flicker just a few days ago, the current School Board braintrust of Ed Kerner, Debbie Bissland, Gene Endress, Karen Zelley, and John Dutton evidently wanted to show him first hand what their concept of "unity" is.
Case in point: A motion was made by Board Member Barbara McMeekin that the Board NOT act on a permanent Superintendent until the new Board is elected and seated in December. Shocker: the motion did NOT pass on the usual 5-4 vote with Kerner, Bissland, Endress, Zelley, and Dutton voting AGAINST andLaCoff, McMeekin, Scheib, and Bilinsky voting FOR.
So much for "unity", eh Barry? Betcha' you didn't quite expect this when Ed spoke to you about this position opening up prior to Myra's actual termination. Welcome back to the now-dysfunctional "family."
And Ms. Bissland, before you lecture the public again on the complexities of hiring a Superintendent, perhaps you can first educate yourself about how to stop getting personally named in federal civil rights lawsuits. Two lawsuits in two years, what a record to be proud of! Between litigation and possible settlement costs due to the legal complaints piling up against YOU coupled with your short sighted decision with the current board majority to needlessly compensate two Superintendents for one position, how much of the taxpayer's money are YOU personally responsible for wasting since you have been on this School Board? In this resident's opinion your ability to make reasonably intelligent decisions is questionable at best, but yet the residents of this district are to actually trust YOU as the Personnel Committee Chair? Please. Why don't you first try to actually listen to the vast majority of people you are supposed to represent and demonstrate the intestinal fortitude to do the right thing with your vote instead of offering up mere lip service to "take into consideration what we said."
A third request was made for Mr. Endress' accounting of the additional $2.6 million in administrative salary positions that he claims were directly attributed to Myra Forrest's spending, despite the fact that the School Board and the School Board alone has the sole responsibility for district expenses. Mr. Endress was asked to clear up this inconsistency back on July 6, 2009, but unfortunately the only response received so far was this evening: "Don't hold your breath." Nice Gene, real nice. Your character, charm, and integrity is overwhelming.
Lastly, Mr. John Dooley, the OJR School District's Solicitor, was asked -again- by Board Member Barbara McMeekin for a more detailed accounting of his firm's June 2009 invoice, totaling over a $14,000 expense to the district. And -once again- her request was apparently either disregarded or completely ignored.
In this resident's opinion it certainly begs the question if it is pure incompetence or intentional obstruction on the part of the district Solicitor's office, the Law Firm of Dischell, Bartle, Yanoff & Dooley out of Lansdale PA, that a seemingly simple request by a School Board member has not been honored despite being publicly requested at least three times over the last 30-45 days. So, Mr. Dooley and Mr. Bartle, what's the holdup? We know that it took only a few billable hours for you to help School Board President Ed Kerner prepare in advance his motion to terminate Myra Forrest in the days prior to her actual termination on June 22. One would think that you shouldn't need to be reminded that your fiduciary duty is to provide council to ALL MEMBERS of the Owen J Roberts School Board, not just five of them. Anything short of this is illegal and you know it. Please take the opportunity to do the right thing here.

Don't forget!
ReplyDeleteThere were other classis board antics last night. Let's talk about Gene Endress, who copied Dr. Forrest's evaluation and publicaly distributed it. Kerner's excuse was classic, "What happened there was I lost my copy and asked Mr. Endress to copy it from TPA funds."
And that cost $44?
Mr. Endress's excuse was far more interesting. "I believe Dr. Forrest recinded her right to privacy."
We shall see about that. cha ching.
Since it has been made public, we should discuss the 25 pages of hate that 5 BM created, but that is for a separate blog!
I think we should create an evaluation for our Board members.
If you have been threatened (and we know people have)by any member of this board now is the time to stand up!
Thank you Mrs. McMeekin and Mr. LaCoff for trying to steer the board in a positive manner.
ReplyDeleteIt seemed to me that Dr. Flicker has signed on to the Foul 5. If it wasn't a prepared statement, he had trouble. As for the prepared statement, his profile was lacking PROFESSIONAL accolades and experience. A retired elementary school principal, with an old superintendent certificate, that hasn't attained central office experience in his career has to be lacking something. Or in somebody's back pocket.
Come on out of your office without an attorney and speak to the people waiting patiently in the lobby to see you. Earn your big bucks we are paying you. Denny will still be waiting for you in Puerto Rico at the end of the day.
As for Anna and Sue, I think they need some professional help. They are angry, rude women.
A rational request would seem to be that the search committee for the new Super be conducted by the three that will still be there to work with this superintendent. Bissland, Bilinski and McMeekin should be doing the search. LaCoff was absolutely right with Zelley's argument. She claimed experience was needed to know what a super should look like - yet she is ignoring the input of the longest tenured members on the board - LaCoff, Scheib and McMeekin.
ReplyDeleteCan't they at least give the appearance of acting legitimately?
Last evening, after the meeting,I met with the candidates briefly and inquired as to why we haven't had a "meet and greet' for the community at large...I was given many excuses but by and large it is down to venue and format..I asked Barb and a couple of others to help set this up (obtain venue and offer any experiences we can draw from) and I offered to serve as moderator (if no one else wants to do it) to make sure rules are enforced and limit mayhem(no laughter pls). I suggested a format and asked them to get together to decide what would be off limits. We need at least one and probably several of these to get a true feel for these folks and their alliances/agendas if any...An interesting point was made by one of the candidates and that was that the schools are off limits as KERNER CONTROLS THEM AND LAST TIME THEY TRIED THEY WERE THROWN OUT.Funny the tpa has unrestricted access but we can't get our foot in the door ..No more surprises.

ReplyDeleteAnybody from OJR attending?
rpixly - if you are looking for some help setting up a get to know the canidates for this falls election, I would gladly help. I have been wondering how I could learn more about them.
ReplyDeleteNot much of a blogger, but if you can give me some way to contact maybe we can do something?
Not repeating the habits that got us where we are is key. Lets make new mistakes not repeat old ones...
We absolutely need to pursue another candidate forum. I believe neighborhood meetings and coffee klatches could happen after that.
ReplyDeleteI also think it could be valuable to start a PR campaign. This is a great district! We basically kick butt in so many areas. We should not let these 5 evil doers continue their terrorist attack without a strong fight.
Part of the PR campaign might be rebutting Zelley's claim that we should not leave the hiring of a super to "inexperienced" board members. Perhaps we could gather the qualifications of candidates. We could also enlist teachers and residents who have helped with the process in the past.
I just don't think we should make this easy for them!
Can someone please explain to me what New York has to do with this? What is "New York scum"?
ReplyDeleteHow come the solicitor knows so much about the Sunshine Law to keep the public from speaking, but hasn't a clue about the "right to know" laws? The district needs to hire a law firm that knows how to interpret the law quickly and with confidence. They don't display any of that at these meetins.
ReplyDeletebecause it is obvious who the solicitor is aligned with. In essence we are paying him to protect the people we are against, which is a real kick in the pants!
ReplyDeleteWith so many school districts now looking for a new super, I figure, by mid November OJR's board will decide(5 to 4) that Dr. Flicker has done an outstanding job thus far, and offer him a five year deal as they are leaving the building. Who else would want the job at OJR
ReplyDeleteright now. Somebody sitting up there is way smarter than they look. It's scary.
Once again, and not to beat a dead horse,What is the candidate's plan to get to know the people and be heard...If you don't, it's a crapshoot and in my opinion you don't really want the office..I've offerred suggestions but myself, along with the others here, are not your campaign managers..Sounds tough,it's gonna get tougher.Once I decide on my candidates I'll work very hard to support you, till then let's get going, time's awastin..The last presidential election campaign started a full two years early,it's never too early.Rick
